What is EPDM?
EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) is a type of synthetic rubber that is manufactured for all types of sealing products such as door seals and garden and household appliance hoses. In sheet format, EPDM’s properties make it the perfect material for flat roofing applications:
- It repels all weather conditions.
- It’s flexible and easily bends with no stress, which means a perfect fit.
- It stretches, with up to 300% elongation, so allows for typical building movement.
- Its performance isn’t affected by extremes of temperature, and is proven to be stable between -30°C and +120°C.
- It won’t tear, split or crack with age.
What does ‘fleece reinforced EPDM’ mean?
DuoPly is a fleece reinforced membrane: reinforced externally with a fleece layer. The benefits include:
- Added strength, reinforcement and durability.
- Over twice the thickness of standard EPDM (1.0mm-1.14mm) that is generally available in the UK market.
- Over 180% greater tear resistance and over 60% greater resistance to penetration than 1.52mm commercial grade EPDM.
- There is no shrinkage or stress to cause leaks at laps, flashings, upstands or other angle changes or penetrations.
Are EPDM synthetic rubber roofing membranes new?
No, EPDM was first manufactured in America in the 1960s, and it has been used as a roofing membrane for over 50 years.
How proven are EPDM flat roofing membranes?
It is estimated that over 1.3 billion square metres of EPDM have been installed worldwide, in climates as extreme as the Middle East and Alaska.
What does DuoPly fleece reinforced EPDM look like?
With the added thickness and strength of the fleece reinforced layer, DuoPly EPDM leaves an outstanding slate grey smooth finished appearance, even when overlaying existing surfaces. It can look particularly attractive and compatible with period property slate and tiled roofs.
How long will a DuoPly fleece reinforced EPDM flat roof last for?
All independent trained installation companies should offer a 20 year warranty. However, the evidence from both laboratory tests and actual installations – suggests that, when correctly installed, a DuoPly fleece reinforced EPDM roof will last in excess of 50 years.
Is a DuoPly fleece reinforced EPDM synthetic rubber membrane suitable for my flat roof?
DuoPly fleece reinforced EPDM is suitable for virtually all flat and low sloping roofs, whether you need to replace an old roof of your garage or are building a new extension.
Can I walk on it?
Yes you can. If you need regular access to the roof area, we recommend that you install our specially designed walkway pads on top of the DuoPly EPDM.
Is DuoPly fleece reinforced EPDM environmentally friendly?
EPDM is one of the most environmentally friendly materials used today in the construction industry; its low impact on the environment has led the International Kyoto Ecology agreement to recommend EPDM as the best value sustainable eco-sound roofing available. EPDM is particularly suited to Green Roofs.
DuoPly EPDM is a dark slate-grey colour, what impact will that have on my property?
Because of our climate a dark coloured membrane is always preferable. DuoPly EPDM attracts and collects more heat, so saving energy and reducing the demand for heating – which can therefore help reduce your energy bills. And because of the reduced heating demand, DuoPly EPDM creates fewer carbon emissions, making it more environmentally friendly. Of course, this does not negate the need for good insulation within your roof structure.
Is DuoPly fleece reinforced EPDM expensive?
No, despite its considerable technical advantages, it compares well with other quality roofing systems in terms of cost, and, because of its longevity, it will often work out to be more cost effective in the long term too. In addition to this, installation is generally faster than other roofing systems, so labour costs will be lower.
I know I need my roof replaced, but what about insulation?
Insulating a flat roof can deliver real benefits; a warm comfortable room, lower energy bills and improved energy performance ratings. Your trained local roofing company will be able to advise you on whether your existing insulation is sufficient or needs to be upgraded. Most existing flat roofs are build using a Cold Roof Construction but modern building regulations usually require a Warm Roof Construction.
Are all roofing estimates and surveys free and without obligation?
Yes. Every independent trained flat roofing company offers a full service, including design and specification and free written quotations.
What warranties are available on the DuoPly EPDM system?
